Freshmen - Required Courses

First-time freshmen under age 21 who enroll in a four-year degree program at a Kentucky public university must complete these courses:

English/language arts

4 credits required from English I, English II, English III, English IV (or AP English)

Mathematics

3 credits required: Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry

Science

3 credits required: credits to include life science, physical science, and earth/space science (at least one lab course)

Social studies

3 credits required from U.S. History, Economics, Government, World Geography and World

Health & Physical education

½ credit required in each

History & appreciation of visual, performing arts

1 credit required: history and appreciation of visual and performing arts or another arts course that incorporates such content

Foreign Language

2 credits required, or demonstrated competency

Electives

5 credits required (3 rigorous) Recommended strongly: 1 or more courses that develop computer literacy

Substitutions

A student may substitute an integrated, applied, interdisciplinary, or higher level course within a program of study if the substituted course offers the same or greater academic rigor and the course covers or exceeds the minimum required content.

TOTAL CREDITS: 22 (17 required credits; 5 elective credits)

Completing the PCC will enable students to compete for Kentucky Educational Excellence Scholarships (KEES).
